Orange County Deputy Sheriff’s Police Benevolent Association Cites Martucci’s Commitment to Public Safety in Fighting Senator Metzger’s Dangerous Bail Elimination Law
Mike Martucci, candidate for the 42nd State Senate District seat, received his first union endorsement when the Orange County Deputy Sheriff’s Police Benevolent Association (PBA) threw their support behind Martucci in his effort to unseat incumbent state senator Metzger.
Citing Senator Metzger’s disregard for public safety, and failure to consult the sheriffs of the district before championing her dangerous bail elimination law for criminals, PBA President Jeremy Yela said, “Senator Metzger sponsored and pushed for a law that callously endangered the residents of Orange County and put law enforcement officers at risk. There are far too many examples of individuals being released following arrest only to quickly reoffend. Our union simply cannot support Senator Metzger’s continued presence in the State Senate.”
While Senator Metzger eventually voted in favor of reforms to her ill-conceived Bail Elimination legislation, she only did so in response to opposition led by state senate candidate Mike Martucci, the law enforcement community, and victims’ rights advocates. The changes included in the State Budget remain inadequate with a number of crimes not subject to bail or pre-trial detention should a judge feel it appropriate.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Orange County Deputy Sheriff’s Police Benevolent Association,” said Mike Martucci, “The endorsement is a recognition of not only my strong stance on public safety and commitment to the families of the 42nd State Senate District, but also a strong rebuke of Senator Metzger’s failures. I’ve said it before, and it bears repeating, Senator Metzger has shown a propensity to act before thinking. ‘Shoot, ready, aim’ seems to be her frequent failed approach to public policy. This time, it put the lives of our residents in danger.”
The Martucci campaign anticipates that this will be the first of many union endorsements given his reputation of being a principled businessman who has worked closely with unions to advocate for the rights of hardworking women and men across the state.
